Transcripts! Every Episode You Can Read
Jul 29, 2021Although podcasting's primary form is in audio, I believe the information on Shelf Love should be available for all. Podcasts don't work for everyone, for lots of reasons, so my goal is to create transcripts for every episode.
Here's a little bit about my process for creating transcripts: starting in Spring of 2020, I started editing my episodes using a program called Descript, which creates a computer transcription of my raw audio and then allows me to edit the audio content using the transcription. As I go, I inevitably have to clean up proper nouns, fix speaker labels, and generally do lots of clean up of the transcription. I actually find it really helpful to edit this way and it’s about 25% extra effort to clean up the transcription as I go. Every episode that I edited completely in Descript is published from day 1 with a transcript.
All of the episodes that came out before I started editing with Descript need to go through the same process - but without the audio editing. For an hour of audio, it takes at least 2 hours to clean up the transcript. Since I’m on a bit of a treadmill of releasing weekly episodes, I don’t have a ton of time to also edit transcripts of older episodes, but I am slowly but surely working my way back. This is a one-person operation, folks. The service costs me money and the transcription takes time, but I think it’s worth it and I’d rather spend the time revisiting the older episodes myself than spend it trying to raise money to pay someone else to do it. (What can I say: I like the sound of my own voice. It’s a hazard of the hobby.)
Until 100% of my episodes have transcripts, this page will hopefully help those who want to read episodes, rather than listen, find the transcripts that are available.
Here are all of the episodes that have transcripts. Every episode page has the complete suite of information for the episode: the audio player, the show notes, and beneath that, the transcript, so keep scrolling until you hit the transcript.
